About Email Accounts

What is a POP3 email account?

POP (or POP3) stands for Post Office Protocol. This is a system through which your Mail Client on your computer communicates with your Mail Server. Your Mail Server receives messages being sent to your email account, and, through Post Office Protocol, transfers them to your computer. Your mail server is often referred to as your POP server.

Can Eudora Email By Phone access my account?

You must have an Internet-accessible POP3 email account for Eudora Email By Phone to be able to access your email.

Not all Internet Service Providers use POP servers. If your Internet Service Provider does not use this system, then you cannot access your email at this account through Eudora Email By Phone.

PLEASE NOTE: America Online, Compuserve, Microsoft Network, Hotmail and Rocketmail users do not have a POP address and therefore cannot use the Check POP mail feature. AT&T WorldNet and Sprintmail subscribers will not be able to check their pop account due to firewall restrictions that prevent access.

PLEASE NOTE: If your mail server resides behind a security firewall, you will not be able to check your POP mail from Eudora Email By Phone. Check with your system administrator to see if they have set up a special port for external mail access.

How can I make my email accessible?

If your email account is not Internet-accessible, whether it's behind a security firewall or on a non-POP Internet Service Provider, you have several options to still be able to use Eudora Email By Phone.

1. If behind a firewall, you can try contacting your system administrator to see if you can be provided a special account for use with Eudora Email By Phone.

2. You can sign up for a FREE
Eudora Web-Mail account. With a Eudora Web-Mail account you have two options:

(a) Use your
Eudora Web-Mail account as your primary email account,
with all its benefits.

(b) Use both your current account at your desk and your Web-Mail
account on the road. Do this by forwarding your mail to your Eudora Web-Mail account. You can set up
Eudora Pro Email filters to forward messages automatically (or to forward only your important messages!)  Some email systems will also allow you to auto-forward. Again, check with your system administrator.

3. Switch to an Internet Service Provider that does support POP3 access, such as EarthLink.

About the Email By Phone Service

How do I use the service?

Once you have accessed the email delivery system (by dialing the 800# and entering your PIN), the system tells you how many email messages are in your mailbox (i.e. "you have six messages").
Simply follow the prompts and the system will play the headings for the message you designate. In the heading, you’ll hear:

  • sender
  • date and time sent
  • subject line

Next, select from the following options:

  • Press "1" to hear the body of the message
  • Press "2" to select another message
  • Press "3" to delete the message

After listening to the body of the message you can:

  • Press "1" to listen to the message again
  • Press "2" to select another message
  • Press "3" to delete the message

You’ll find more detailed instructions on our Instructions for the Email Retrieval Service page.

What happens to the email messages that I listen to?

You do not impact your email messages by listening to them over the telephone as long as you don't delete them. They're still available for you to view from your computer at a later time. However, once you've accessed your messages from your computer, they typically will not be accessible from the telephone

What about attachments?

Attachments that are in "text" notation can generally be read text-to-voice. Other attachments may not be "readable" by our text-to-voice system (for example spreadsheets). You will be told by the voice that an attachment exists.

Can I listen to messages that I’ve already read on my computer?

Once you've accessed your messages on your computer, they typically will not be accessible from the telephone.

What if the system can’t access my ISP (Internet Service Provider)?

The text-to-voice system will access your Internet Service Provider. Connection to your Internet Service Provider depends on the same criteria that govern your normal connections (e.g., when your provider experiences busy periods, you will have the same difficulty accessing the text-to-voice system, as we cannot affect your provider's accessibility).

What if I don’t hear anything immediately after dialing? How long does it take to hear my messages?

The Eudora Email By Phone system accesses your Internet Service Provider. Once connected, the text-to-voice system scans for the number of email messages available. This process generally takes at least 15 seconds (it can take longer if your ISP runs at a slower speed). Accessing the body of the message generally takes no longer than another 15 seconds. However, if you have attachments, the access time may be up to a minute or longer.

About non-email services

How can I let others leave a voice message for me using this service?

Provide your friends and colleagues with the following toll-free number: 1-800-999-2326 and your Admin/Voice Mailbox number (provided when you sign up) then invite them to leave voice messages for you. To hear your voice messages, enter your Mail Box Number and follow the prompts.
